Achieving a Dynamic and Consistent Mix: Dacota G’s Approach

I've been mixing a lotttt lately, and it's got me thinking more about dynamics than ever. With every mix comes a series of artful decisions about how much push and pull it needs, how dynamic (or not) it should be, and ultimately what feels best for the song. Depending on the track, you may want a mix to feel dynamic and alive while still feeling controlled and consistent to some degree. Finding that sweet spot where you maintain energy, emotion, and impact without losing balance is a balancing act in itself.
All of this got me thinking it was time for a blog on the matter and to get another POV! I had a blast chatting with Grammy Award winning mixer and engineer Dacota G to get his take, and I think you're really going to dig his perspective.
I asked him: "What do you think is key to achieving a mix that feels both dynamic and consistent? Are there any techniques or philosophies you rely on to maintain energy and movement without sacrificing balance?"
Achieving a Dynamic and Consistent Mix Through Transients
He said: “First off, these are great questions. To achieve a mix that feels both dynamic and consistent, I’m going to focus on transients and manipulate them to convey a certain overall feel based on that specific musical idea. The other focus will be on compression and limiting. This is largely genre dependent. If I’m working on a song that is driven by the drums, like in hip hop, I do my best to get those transients to punch through. One reason for doing that is to enhance the emotion and overall feel of the song, but the other reason, and maybe the most important reason at this time, is to get the song to translate on our phones. Most consumers are hearing music for the first time on their phones, so it’s important to make sure that not only does the mix connect on a wide variety of sound systems with a fuller frequency range, but also on our phones, which can only recreate around 100 Hz to about 15 kHz. So how do we get that low end that we hear in our cars to translate on a phone speaker? For me, it’s pushing transients and saturation. On the flip side, if I’m working on an R&B ballad that I want to sound warm and full, I’m probably doing the opposite. I’m going to smooth out those transients to help convey a rounder, smoother overall sound. To preserve dynamics, I tend to stay away from compression and limiting on the overall stereo bus. I might do a little bit for glue, but I’m not pushing the overall mix like I would on a hip hop or Top 40 pop song.
Using Stereo Bus Processing with Purpose
My process might be a bit unorthodox compared to other mixers. For a hip hop song or a pop song that I know I’m going to have to get pretty loud and in your face, I like to gain stage my stems so that the average peak is around -10 dBFS. I’ll mix around that level, and then over time I’ll start to add some compression, EQ, saturation, etc. to my stereo bus. I like to make decisions at the track level rather than drastically altering the sound of a mix with stereo compression. I know some people like to mix through their stereo bus from the start, but I’ve always found that to hurt my mixes more than help.
Preserving the Artist’s Vision
I’m working with a lot of talented artists and producers who have poured all of their ideas into this demo. I don’t want to immediately start changing the identity and the foundation of what made them like their demo. I like to preserve their ideas while also enhancing them. With this approach, I can creatively work my way up to the desired final level. I’m looking for inches to gain throughout the mix. When it comes to a more dynamic song, I might just work closer to the level of the original stems. Instead of compression, I’ll do manual gain rides so that I can have full control over each element in the mix during each section of the song. I think that’s truly the key to maintaining energy and movement without sacrificing balance.
Final Thoughts
What really spoke to me about Dacota’s answer was the nuance in his approach and the fine tuning involved in figuring out what the song is actually calling for based on the genre, mood, lift, and energy.
I really liked how, for a more dynamic song, he works closer to the level of the original multitrack. With songs still being prettyyyyy darn loud for the most part in 2026, it takes an artful approach to preserve that movement without sacrificing balance, rather than being hell bent on making everything “competitive” all the time.
Beyond his approach to transient shaping and stereo bus processing, there’s a real rooted respect for the music, the art, and where the producers and artists were when they delivered the rough mix. The processing becomes a vehicle for respecting the song and bringing out the best in the art, which is something I really appreciate!
